Water Lily Care: Pond Planting, Feeding & Overwintering

Nymphaea spp.

Water lilies are the cornerstone of a healthy pond — shade reduces algae, lily pads cool the water for fish, and well-fed plants flower from June through September. The only tricky parts are planting depth and dormant overwintering.

Planting depth

Hardy lilies: rhizome 30–90 cm below water surface. Start shallow on a brick stack and lower as leaves reach the surface. Tropical lilies: 15–45 cm.

Containers & soil

Use a wide, shallow aquatic basket (35 cm+ across) lined with hessian. Heavy garden loam — NEVER potting mix (it floats and clouds the pond). Top with 2 cm pea gravel.

Feeding

Aquatic fertilizer tablets pushed deep into the soil monthly, May through August. Surface fertilizer feeds algae instead of the lily.

Pond coverage

Aim for 50–70% surface coverage between lily pads + marginal plants — enough shade to suppress algae but enough open water for gas exchange.

Overwintering (hardy lilies)

Move the basket to the deepest part of the pond (below ice level) before first hard frost. Trim yellowing leaves. The rhizome goes dormant and re-shoots in spring.

Overwintering (tropical lilies)

Either treat as annuals, or lift the tuber after first frost, rinse, and store damp in moss at 10–15°C.

Pond plants from unverified sources can introduce snail eggs, leeches, or invasive species (parrot feather, water hyacinth in some regions). Buy from licensed nurseries.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my water lily flowering?

Usually not enough sun (needs 6+ hours direct), too deep too soon, or unfed. Aquatic fertilizer tabs monthly from May–August fix most flowering problems.

Do water lilies need fish?

No, but fish help — they eat mosquito larvae and produce nutrients lilies use. Avoid koi, which uproot baskets and shred leaves.

How do I keep my pond from going green with algae?

Shade 50–70% of the surface with lily pads + marginals, add submerged oxygenators (hornwort, elodea), don't overfeed fish, and skim debris weekly.

Can water lilies survive ice?

Hardy lilies survive frozen ponds if the rhizome is below the ice line. Move the basket to the deepest section before winter; a small de-icer keeps a gas-exchange hole open for fish.

Track your Water Lily in PlantbookOS

Adaptive reminders learn your plant's actual dry-down rate in your home — not a generic schedule. Log waterings by voice, snap photos to track growth, and ask FloraAI when something looks off.
